2011 Jan 8
The weather forecasts gave us one day of good weather for our small plane to make it from southern California to Washington with a plane full of cats and dogs who had been rescued from death row and were being offered love and forever homes in the Pacific Northwest.
Determined to make full use of that one clear day, we flew to Cat House On the Kings in Fresno, CA the afternoon of Dec 30, to meet those lucky cats and dogs and have them and the plane all ready for a pre-dawn departure on New Year's Eve day.

The night we spent as guests at the Cat House was uplifting and endearing. We were given a lovely comfortable room in the "Senior Cat House" (that 'senior' refers to the cats, not to us!), which delighted us no end. We spent hours enjoying socializing with all the kitties, even dancing gently with them to some old 50s music we found on a radio in the corner. It was fun to be in their company, and those senior kitties did seem to genuinely enjoy the entertainment and affection from us. Loving care and grateful hearts shine from every corner of this phenomenal animal sanctuary; we were glad to have finally seen it for ourselves.
What did not go so well was that night's fog and drop to below-freezing temperatures. We arose very early, loaded our critters up into a volunteer's big truck, and arrived at the airport about an hour before sunrise. The dogs and cats were warm and comfy. But poor Bessie (our airplane) was not so warm and comfy; she was covered completely by a thick layer of frost. Selma airport is a small, uncontrolled airport; there were no facilities or personnel available the night before when we arrived, nor now in the pre-dawn cold. Our friends from the Cat House volunteered some hoses and backpack blowers they had at their home, and we spent a couple of hours defrosting the airplane. After a thorough warming of the engine and a test flight around the pattern, we were ready to start the adventure.
We loaded all 26 cats in their crates into the airplane, then the 7 dogs, leashed loosely to aft tiedowns just to keep them from venturing forward enough to reach the airplane flight controls. As always, the dogs were on comfortable warm thick layers of blankets and bedding, well within our reach for comforting head scratches. A couple of them spent most of the trip snoozing contentedly on the co-pilot's lap. The kitties slept for most of the trip.
We flew directly to Auburn, Washington and handed off our precious cargo to our rescuers, who hurried to make it to the next night's resting place for the kitties. We refueled quickly and turned back southward, running from another storm that was headed for northern California by that evening.
The weather reports turned out to be more optimistic than realistic, for by the time we reached southern Oregon, the overcast layer, snow, and freezing rain had already set in. We could not make it through that kind of weather over the Siskiyou mountains at night in our little airplane, so we diverted to Klamath Falls, the only airport in the vicinity we could reach that was still advertising a clear patch of sky overhead, where we would be able to descend without flying through freezing rain. After landing on a very icy runway and spending 45 minutes with pliers and hammer digging out the ice-covered airplane tiedowns so that we could leave the airplane safely for the night, we got a taxi to a nearby motel, warmed up with a nice hot shower, and made it to Denny's about 30 minutes before midnight to ring in the New Year!
That storm had made it to Nevada by the next morning, so our route home required us to divert as far east as Tonopah, NV. But we still made it back to the Los Angeles basin before dark on New Year's Day, and counted it as a fine weekend and a very successful rescue. What a great way to start 2011!

JEREMIAH has come home to us!
2012 January 13
His adopter called to say she had become ill, and could we care for Jeremiah? You bet we could. We rented a plane and flew to Arizona and retrieved him immediately. Jeremiah was indeed a true friend, and we aim to be his true friends, too. He has been eating like crazy and slept his stress away for the first few days, and now he's acting like a young dog again. CHAMP found at the airport!
2012 January 01
A sad, scared but dignified young Champ quickly won the hearts of everyone who met him at the New Orleans airport, and within two days we had permission from his original breeders to give him to a young couple with a younger female boxer mix, all of whom fell totally in love with him at first sight! Champ and Miss Princess are leading the good life now, and Champ's new dad finally has the fishing buddy he wanted! They tell us we made their dreams come true. We think they made Champ's come true, too.

Yo! Get a Load of Yolo!
2011 November--2012 January
Left in the cold, high in the mountains of southern California, life was over before it had barely begun for this orphan teenager.
Little did he know, his adventures had only begun! As of January 7, it's back to snow but this time with a family who adores him, and lots of fun and play in the Pacific Northwest!

Saving Scarlett -- Love Forever at Last!
2011 August--December
Found on the streets, teats full but puppies absent, a battle-torn very hungry pitbull.
Hardly that sought-after doggie in the window.
But after we brought Miss Scarlett home to love and food, warmth and stuffed animals,
we discovered a warm heart and sweet spirit that changed us forever.
