2011 Mar 16
Romo, the handsome young dog with the heart problem who was rescued from a high-kill shelter in California, was flown to his forever home in Young, Arizona today! They will have him neutered under very careful supervision, when veterinarians think it is safe to do so. And for the rest of his happy life, he will have family and excellent socialization with other dogs in this special sanctuary called "Tara's Babies." One of his new aunts, Karen, is shown here in the truck at Payson airport when she came to pick him up. Romo was accompanied by another very lucky young canine, a one-year-old dachshund named "Stanley" from central California! On the drive down to Los Angeles, Stanley had been put in a plastic crate. He quickly chewed his way out and thereafter sat next to the driver as sweetly as could be. Stanley wants only love and compansionship -- and proper respect due a dog of his stature! He was just as sweet in the airplane (of course we didn't even consider trying to put him in a crate!). Romo we DID put in a crate, so as to be sure that he remained still, for the sake of his heart.

Romo is the first dog we've ever flown in a crate. Most dogs we just leash loosely from a tiedown at the aft cabin, so that they can move freely and find their own comfortable place in the roomy, cushioned, blanket-covered main cabin. But this trip, we squeezed in an extra-large kennel for Romo, plus the plane's back seat on top of that (since the backseat was needed for the return trip). There was plenty of room, at least at the start of the flight. We had extremely strong tailwinds, which made the flight much shorter than we expected, but those tailwinds led to much turbulence in the descent into Payson. So much so that in one instance, just as we were ending communications with air traffic control and switching to the local traffic frequency for Payson airport, we were hit with such a jolt that we all floated abruptly to the ceiling. Headsets came off, the portable GPS went flying, and Romo's cage lurched forward, hitting the backs of the front seats and opening the cage door. So just as we were flying the final approach in the pattern to Runway 24 at payson, Romo's head appeared at my right ear: "Hi Bonny! This is where I wanted to be all along!" Oh boy... but we made it to the runway just fine. Once safely landed, it all seemed quite amusing. And the dogs were so cheerful and sweet, it was easy to forget about the winds and just be happy with them in the beautiful surroundings of that special part of northern Arizona. Karen was in her truck looking for us and was at the airplane before I even had it tied down. Romo and Stanley jumped in her truck and her lap as if they had been looking for her forever. Which I guess, they had! Thank you all, for making this happen. Especially Mark Penn of Sonoma, who drove Romo all the way down to Bakersfield; On Wings Of Care volunteer Dave Couch, who drove both Romo and Stanley to Glendale Humane Society to board Monday and Tuesday nights (in Los Angeles); Glendale Humane Society, who never fail to offer to board our rescue animals while they wait for their flights with us; Larry Buchanan, our airplane mechanic at El Monte airport in CA who fixes everything and who managed to find a way to pack everything -- large dog crate, airplane back seat, Romo and Stanley, our luggage -- into the airplane so that we hardly noticed it was all there; and everyone who donated to help cover some of our costs to make these rescues happen.

Original call for help with Romo follows:
Romo's heart is broken, and he needs transport from Sonoma to Payson, AZ
Romo's heart has broken, literally. This handsome young dog was saved from a rural kill shelter in Sonoma County, CA in the nick of time. It seemed Romo's luck finally had changed for the better. That did not last.
Vet exams discovered that this two-year-old , 50-lb shepherd mix has a heart condition -- ventricular arrhythmia. He could die suddenly from heart failure; or he could live for many years. But he needs to avoid stress. (Being in shelters and kennels for the past year haven't exactly helped his problem.) This all means that he is not adoptable from Sonoma Humane Society, where he is now. They cannot keep him either, for they do not offer hospice services.
We have a loving home for him near Payson, AZ, where he will be loved and cared for for the rest of his life.
We're working to raise $275 to help toward our estimated total costs of $525 to drive him to Los Angeles, board him for two nights (together with a dachsund and possibly a few more small dogs who will join him on the flight), and then fly him to Payson, AZ on Wedneday Mar 16.
If you can help or want to inquire about him, please contact us, or send a donation with PayPal or directly to us and state that you would like it to help Romo.
Here's are the veterinarians' findings about Romo's heart:
"Heart murmur and arrhythmia noted on intake exam. X-rays revealed an abnormally large heart size. Heart ultrasound performed today revealed he has a condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) which ultimately results in heart failure or sudden death due to severe ventricular arrhythmia. The progression of disease varies in different animals, however Romo already has a significantly enlarged heart and arrhythmia which give him a very guarded prognosis."
This photo of Romo was taken while he was at the Shafter Animal Control earlier a few months ago. The formal evaluation made when he was at the Shafter Animal Shelter shows what anyone can tell very quickly on meeting him: Romo is a very sweet dog! Here is what they concluded:
Shafter Animal Shelter - Animal Adoption Evaluation 2010 Dec 7:
Lies Down on command, Walks on a leash, Dominant, Attentive, Gets along with dogs.
Good with submissive dogs, will chase cats, pulls a bit while on leash.
Happy, Quiet, Friendly, Energetic, Inquisitive, Plays with toys in his own time.
Results of 'bite test' (where they pinch his paw between his toes two times): He seemed not to like it but he only very gently mouthed the person's hand to try to get him to stop.
He doesn't like to be pulled.
He comes when called, wants attention, but can be distracted slightly, wanting to explore the area first. No food or toy aggression, allows handler to pull away either with no interference.
Temperament test: All "Good" (second only to "Excellent") for neutral and initiated interaction and bite test; "Excellent" for Food/Toy possession.
Tester's overall comments: "Romo is a very sweet dog. He loves to be petted and loved but does not like to be pulled or pinched. He gets along well with other submissive dogs but will chase cats. He loves to explore new areas, will sit or lie down when commanded. He knows how to walk on a leash but does pull a bit. He may be a little shy and slow when first meeting new people, but he warms up quickly and is very nice."

Miss T'Chen was lost in Hurricane Isaac, and saved 800 miles away!
2012 Oct 02
The same rains that made us work "On WHEELS Of Care" this week kept us grounded for this trip, which serendipitously combined the transport of Skip northward and the joyful and miraculous reunion of Miss T'Chen, who had been rescued and taken to Illinois after Hurricane Isaac, with her family in Baton Rouge!
This flight went almost as planned, and our plane was filled to over-flowing on every leg. And we met some wonderful new cat and dog rescues in Idaho and Oregon!

Champ and Miss Princess are leading the good life now, and Champ's new dad finally has the fishing buddy he wanted! They tell us we made their dreams come true.
