Rescue Tails
Over 50 Pit Bulls At Shelter in Lancaster, CA

2011 Jan 31
You know something's fishy when 50 pit bull terriers show up at one shelter, and they all share similar features and show signs of neglect and poor nutrition. The story we got was that an irresponsible pit bull breeder had been allowing his dogs to in-breed and was cited by the local police for having too many dogs in his kennels, so he began slowly dropping them off day by day at the local shelter to avoid paying penalty fees.
Since brothers were mating with sisters, some of these poor dogs were born with deformities. One dogs has no toes, another has a jaw that looks broken but is not. Some have docked tails. Most like they have American Bulldog heads on English Bulldog bodies. They appeared to have never known human affection, but they seemed sweet-tempered nonetheless.
This was going to be no small rescue operation. As of 2011 February 15, there remained over 25 in the shelter awaiting rescue, and their time is running out fast.
On Wings Of Care jumped at the first chance to send one of these poor dogs to a very wonderful forever home with Stephen and his family in West Virgina, longtime lovers and owners of pit bull terriers. "Bobo" needed to get out of the shelter quickly, so we helped arrange a foster for him the first night near Lancaster, then On Wings Of Care volunteer Dave drove down to pick him up in the morning, and then drove all day to take Bobo to Sacramento, where another wonderful volunteer Patty picked him up. Bobo was fostered by Patty until the weather would permit Bobo to fly commercially to the east coast. Five days later, Bobo was in his new home and with his forever family.
To us that meant 1 saved, 49 to go!
Include below are photos of some of the dogs who remain in the shelter and need homes, as of mid-February 2011.
Update 2011 May 9:
We have learned that about half of these dogs taken to the shelter were pulled by rescues and have either found homes or are in foster homes for now. Some of the others were euthanized, either because it was felt that homes could not be found or that their health warranted it. This is not the outcome we work to effect, we would have liked to find a way to give life and happiness to every one of these dogs. Next time we'll have to try harder. May those who did not receive homes rest in peace.

JEREMIAH has come home to us!
2012 January 13
His adopter called to say she had become ill, and could we care for Jeremiah? You bet we could. We rented a plane and flew to Arizona and retrieved him immediately. Jeremiah was indeed a true friend, and we aim to be his true friends, too. He has been eating like crazy and slept his stress away for the first few days, and now he's acting like a young dog again. CHAMP found at the airport!
2012 January 01
A sad, scared but dignified young Champ quickly won the hearts of everyone who met him at the New Orleans airport, and within two days we had permission from his original breeders to give him to a young couple with a younger female boxer mix, all of whom fell totally in love with him at first sight! Champ and Miss Princess are leading the good life now, and Champ's new dad finally has the fishing buddy he wanted! They tell us we made their dreams come true. We think they made Champ's come true, too.

Saving Scarlett -- Love Forever at Last!
2011 August--December
Found on the streets, teats full but puppies absent, a battle-torn very hungry pitbull.
Hardly that sought-after doggie in the window.
But after we brought Miss Scarlett home to love and food, warmth and stuffed animals,
we discovered a warm heart and sweet spirit that changed us forever.
