Wildlife & Habitat

Here we'll share with you our work with wildlife and their habitat.  Some of these articles are wildlife rescues; others are about research, protection, and preservation of endangered species and their habitat.  For some we have not yet written their stories; until we do, we'll include their photos for your enjoyment now.  Our work has included hands-on rescues, raising, rehab, and release of wildlife; aerial tracking and surveying of eagles, falcons,  foxes, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, black bear, and many more.  We also help with transports of large shipments of veterinary supplies and equipment and personnel all over the world to help save wildlife and protect ecosystems such as the Galapagos.  We have supported the restoration of ecosystems after large fires, and the evacuation of wildlife from disasters such as fire and flood where possible.   To see our work with marine life and ecosystems, please visit our pages under Ocean Conservation and Gulf of Mexico.

Veterinary supplies to the Galapagos

UPDATE:  2011 Jun 19 galapagos-fundingstatus-6-20110620

We have sent the
veterinary supplies!

We all used our credit cards to do this,  but we are
still $1,220 short!

Please help us pay this bill!
And become a direct supporter of veterinarians in the Galapagos, who are giving their hearts and souls to help the local domestic and wild animals who need  urgent care and food!

Three pallets packed with 37 crates and 1200 pounds of critically-needed veterinary supplies have now been sent from JFK Airport in New York to the Galapagos Islands for immediate use by local veterinarians!

We will keep you updated on their distribution and use, both on this site and our On Wings Of Care Facebook page!

The unique Galapagos Islands, off the coast of Ecuador in South America, are one of the most important remaining natural ecosystems on Earth.  But the wildlife here are in extreme danger from a threat so common and preventable you will be shocked -- stray cats and dogs! Thousands of homeless stray dogs and cats roam the area hungry and hunting for food.  These strays are starving and, because few if any of them are neutered, they are producing more offspring doomed to starve.  They have not been vaccinated and many of them need treatment for chronic injuries or disease.  And, in their natural drive to stay alive, they are hunting and killing precious endangered wildlife who do not have sufficient protection, natural or from the Park, from these unnatural predators. There is little or no funding available from local governments to support the responsible rescue, support, or neutering of these strays, and Park funding is not available to these domestics. So local veterinarians and their trained volunteers have taken this critical task on themselves, relying on donations for much-needed medicines, supplies, and equipment such as cages and specialized hospital equipment.   We at On Wings Of Care support this objective strongly, and we aim to help these wise and generous veterinarians all we can.

Since last summer, On Wings Of Care has been helping volunteers from the United States collect items most urgently needed by these veterinarians in the Galapagos.  With the help of the nonprofit organization Darwin Animal Doctors based in the Galapagos (DAD; see also their facebook page here) and generous guidance from shipping gurus at SeaRose International, we have organized and packed more than 1200 pounds of supplies into 37 crates.  They are all bound and shrink-wrapped and sitting on three large pallets (each  42" x 48" x 60") at the Compass shipping depot at JFK Airport in New York, ready for shipment to the Galapagos, where veterinarians are eager to receive and put it all to immediate use.  SeaRose found a non-stop flight for us from JFK to Guayaquil, Ecuador which will take all of these crates for a total cost of $2,495.  Air shipment is preferred over sea because it costs only a couple hundred dollars more, is much faster (one day vs several weeks), and offers much better logistics for receipt of the supplies in Ecuador and transport to the Galapagos.

So that is our challenge:  We need to raise $2495 as soon as possible, and put these supplies on the airplane to the Galapagos!

STAY TUNED as we post where we are toward raising these funds!

Following are some more photos as well as videos of work done by these selfless, dedicated veterinarians.  For even more than are provided here, check out these youtube links. You'll see veterinarians from the U.S. and Ecuador showing each other how to use and applying some of the new equipment that Darwin Animal Doctors brought to them last October and which are waiting now in New York for us to ship to them.  Many of these are types of equipment and veterinary supplies that have never been seen in the Galapagos.  They are prized highly and will be of immense use there, especially with the new veterinary infrastructure being set up there with the help of DAD and other organizations.

Young raccoons head for freedom and lives in the forest!

2011 June

Another crop of hand-raised raccoons have arrived in the forest!  These young spirits were hand-raised by DFG-sponsored volunteers from Huntington Beach, CA, and when it came time to find a home for them, On Wings Of Care was there to help with this joyous event!

Seabirds from the Salton Sea

2010 Sep 16

This afternoon around 2pm, a call came in from USFWS at the Salton Sea.  Two pelicans and an ibis, ill, not eating, with fevers.  Could we come and get them and save them?

Iddy Biddy Betty finds a home and best friend forever

2010  Apr 29

Late Thursday night, we received a phone call from a man who lives on some acreage in the foothills above Pasadena, saying that he had just found what he said looked like a small desert tortoise, crossing the street!  He said it was unlike tortoises he had seen before -- the octagons on the shell were smooth, not raised, and there was no 'horn' under the chin area.  We went to have a look.

Raccoons - Rescue, Rehab, Raising, & Release

Among the wildlife on land and sea who have figured large in the daily lives and work of On Wings Of Care volunteers, those who have loomed largest by number since 2003 have been raccoons.  While our refrigerators and freezers remain stocked with the ingredients to simulate mother's milk for most mammals ranging from mice to black bear, the volume of our regular orders for raccoon formula rivaled those for most other animals combined.  It all started by accident when a pair of week-old raccoon babies were handed to us in a parking lot high up in the San Gabriel Mountains, where they had been found cold and nearly dead.

African tortoise rescued from near death

2009 Aug 3

This 27-pound young male African tortoise found by hikers in the Angeles National Forest was a lucky boy!  We were worried when we saw him, as he was bleeding badly.  At first sight, we thought it was a bullet hole...

Wildlife evacuated during the "Jesusita" fire in Santa Barbara

2009  May 6   - Santa Barbara, CA

The fire came to be called the "Jesusita Fire" and eventually burned over 8,700 acres in Santa Barbara county.  Among the last to receive priority were the helpless wildlife at the local Wildlife Rescue Center, including hundreds of pelicans, egrets, and other seabirds as well as other smaller wild birds who were there recovering from injuries (such as that ubiquitous 'natural' hazard known as fishhooks).  We got the first frantic call in the evening and there was no time to spare.

Gallery of photos and videos from work for Wildlife & Habitat

Here is a collection of photos and videos from our work for wildlife and their habitat, for which we have not yet written individual stories. Enjoy!  We'll upload more and add stories soon.  All photos and videos are from within the last 12 years, with the exception of a very special cougar named "Topaz" who endeared himself to us in the early 1990s.

JEREMIAH has come home to us!
2012 January 13

His adopter called to say she had become ill, and could we care for Jeremiah? You bet we could.  We rented a plane and flew to Arizona and retrieved him immediately. Jeremiah was indeed a true friend, and we aim to be his true friends, too. He has been eating like crazy and slept his stress away for the first few days, and now he's acting like a young dog again.  Read more here

CHAMP found at the airport!
2012 January 01

A sad, scared but dignified young Champ quickly won the hearts of everyone who met him at the New Orleans airport, and within two days we had permission from his original breeders to give him to a young couple with a younger female boxer mix, all of whom fell totally in love with him at first sight!  Champ and Miss Princess are leading the good life now, and Champ's new dad finally has the fishing buddy he wanted! They tell us we made their dreams come true. We think they made Champ's come true, too.

Yo!  Get a Load of Yolo!
2011 November--2012 January

Left in the cold, high in the mountains of southern California, life was over before it had barely begun for this orphan teenager.
Little did he know, his adventures had only begun! As of January 7, it's back to snow but this time with a family who adores him, and lots of fun and play in the Pacific Northwest!

Saving Scarlett -- Love Forever at Last!
2011 August--December

Found on the streets, teats full but puppies absent, a battle-torn very hungry pitbull.
Hardly that sought-after doggie in the window.
But after we brought Miss Scarlett home to love and food, warmth and stuffed animals,
we discovered a warm heart and sweet spirit that changed us forever.
